¿What is the colonial zone?

The Colonial Zone or Colonial City is the name given to the oldest part of the city of Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic and was the first city founded by Europeans in America. Tthis part of the city was founded by Spanish colonists.
This area of Santo Domingo has colonial buildings and cobbled streets with dilapidated great tourist attraction, as are the Alcazar de Colon (that belonged to Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus), the Museum of the Royal Houses and the First Cathedral of America .
On December 8, 1990 the area was declared by the United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as World Heritage Site, under the name of Santo Domingo colonial City, covering an area of 93 ha. Today is one of the most important tourist attractions in Santo Domingo and one of the most visited by foreign tourists in the Dominican Republic.
